Don LaMonte Earl: A Utah Modernist Who Brought Light, Glass, and Optimism to Architecture

At MidModUtah, we’re passionate about honoring the architects who shaped Utah’s modernist movement. Don LaMonte Earl is a name that deserves to be mentioned.

Born in 1930 in St. Anthony, Idaho and raised in Fielding, Utah, Earl grew up surrounded by family and tradition. But his future was anything but conventional. After serving in the military and developing his architectural eye, he built a remarkable career helping shape the residential and commercial landscape of Salt Lake City and the greater valley.

What made his work stand out? Light. Glass. Connection.

Don’s homes and buildings are known for their walls of glass, generous skylights, and a seamless integration with nature—hallmarks of mid-century modern design. His spaces feel open, organic, and intentional.

You don’t just live in one of his homes—you experience it every day, from sunrise to sunset. His design ensures that you are able to enjoy your surroundings as much as you are able to functionally move about the space you inhabit.

Throughout his career, he worked with multiple architectural firms, absorbing knowledge and refining a style that balanced modernism with Utah’s unique landscape. He later worked on temples and special projects for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, contributing his talents to some of the state’s most meaningful and significant buildings.

Remarkably, at the age of 50, Don lost his eyesight—but he never stopped designing. Even without vision, his architectural insight and optimism never wavered.
