How to Find a Real Estate Agent You Actually Want to Work With

Here’s what I’ve learned over the last several years of being a Realtor: most people don’t know how to find a real estate agent. They go with a family friend, click the first Zillow profile they see, or hope someone good pops up when they search “realtors near me.”

But you’re about to buy or sell one of the biggest assets of your life. You deserve someone who’s the right fit—not just someone convenient or available.

So, let’s discuss. How do you go about finding a real estate agent who knows what they’re doing, fits your personality, and understands your goals?

Here’s your step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Ask the Right People

Friends and family can be a great place to start—but don’t just go with “my cousin just got her license.” Ask people you trust:

  • Who did you work with when you bought/sold your home?

  • Would you use them again?

  • What did they do that stood out?

Pay attention to what they say beyond “they were nice.” Look for words like “responsive,” “strategic,” “honest,” or “understood the area/market.”

Step 2: Use Google—But Go Beyond Page 1

Yes, people Google “real estate agents near me.” But don’t stop at the top ad or a random profile.

Instead:

  • Search “real estate agent [your city]” or “Realtor in [your neighborhood]”

  • Add keywords like mid century homes, first-time buyer, or investment property if those apply to you

  • Look for agents with a website, client reviews, a social media presence (this can help you down the road, especially if you’re selling), and actual listings—not just a page on a giant brokerage site

Step 3: Look on Instagram

This one might surprise you—but it’s powerful.

Many of today’s most engaged, hands-on agents are active on Instagram. This is especially true for niche areas like mid century homes, where agents showcase their listings, market knowledge, and style in real time. All of these can be of great benefit to both buyers and sellers. This helps you get to know your agent before you reach out.

Try searching:

  • #[yourcity]realtor (e.g. #saltlakerealtor; #utahrealtor)

  • #midmodhomes, #midcenturyhomes, or #midcenturyutah

  • #homesforsaleutah or #mcmhomesforsale

Step 4: Use Online Reviews—With a Grain of Salt

Sites like Zillow, Realtor.com, Redfin, and Google Reviews can give you a starting point. Look for agents with multiple reviews that mention specific things like:

  • Strong communication

  • Expertise in your area

  • Going above and beyond

  • Helping first-time buyers/sellers

  • Creative marketing techniques

Prioritize agents that have reviews that speak to the kind of service you’re looking for.

Step 5: Prioritize Realtors®, Not Just Agents

Not every licensed real estate agent is a Realtor®. A Realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and agrees to follow a strict Code of Ethics. That means higher standards, more accountability, and a clear commitment to putting your interests first.

Agents who invest in becoming a Realtor are often more committed to professional development, better connected in their market, and more prepared to guide you through the process.

Step 6: Interview Before You Commit

I firmly believe a great agent will welcome your questions and walk you through how they work.

Ask things like:

  • How well do you know this area?

  • How do you help clients like me (first-time buyer, mid-mod enthusiast, out-of-state seller)?

  • What’s your communication style?

  • What’s your marketing strategy if I’m selling?

  • Can you explain the buying/selling process and timeline?

And don’t forget the personal stuff:

  • Why did you get into real estate?

  • What do you love about working with clients?

  • What makes you unique?

These questions help you figure out who you’ll enjoy working with and who will truly advocate for you.
