Buyers: What to Look for in a Real Estate Agent
Buying a home can be exciting. It can be the start of something new, something different, something worth celebrating. I believe the space you’re in matters, and, if chosen thoughtfully, a new home can add energy and inspiration to your everyday life.
It can also be overwhelming. The home tours, the decisions, the second-guessing, the offers, the paperwork.
The best thing you can do is choose the right real estate agent to walk you through it all so you end up with the best home for you.
How do you choose?
1. They Listen
A great buyer’s agent doesn’t just nod and smile while you talk. They ask thoughtful questions and pay attention to your lifestyle, not just your price range. That means they’re thinking about home layout, location, lighting, square footage, property size and maintenance needs, if there are good schools nearby. They may even take into account your personal style (especially if you’re after that mid century modern vibe).
I take the time to get to know my clients, from how they live day-to-day to what kind of neighborhood energy they want. My business is personal for me, because what’s right for one person is an absolute “no” for someone else. The result? We only tour homes that are actually a fit, saving time as you look for that perfect match.
2. They’re Fast on the Follow-Up
In this market, you want to be speedy, especially if the home you’ve found is perfect for you. The best homes can disappear in a matter of days; some of them never even get listed at all. Your agent should be quick to respond, quick to schedule showings, and quick to help you submit an offer when it counts. They should also use their connections with other agents to keep an eye out for homes that meet your needs but that haven’t listed yet, giving you a leg up on the competition.
I’ve built my business on responsiveness, because I know every hour counts when making an offer on the house you’ve fallen in love with. I’m continually checking inventory, and I keep my ears open in my network to hear of anything that might pique my buyers’ interests.
3. They Spot the Good & the Bad
You need someone who’s not just there to unlock the door and say, “So, what do you think?”
A home purchase is likely the most important financial decision you’ll ever make. Making that decision based on a five-minute home tour without guidance from an expert can leave you open to missing important details that could impact you down the road.
My property management background means I catch every detail as we go through our walk-throughs. I’ve seen it all, from aging HVAC systems, sloping floors, roofs that need replacing, plumbing problems, and foundational issues. All of this should factor into the choices you make as to whether the home is right for you, as well as the size of the offer. And, once the inspection is complete, I can negotiate for repairs or credits to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.
4. They Keep It Real
A great agent knows this is your life, your budget, and your future. Their job is to be your consultant; a guide with your best interests at heart.
I explain the process in plain language and answer your questions (no matter how small) so you can feel confident in your decisions all the way through the close.
5. They Know the Local Vibes
A national brokerage site won’t tell you what it feels like to live in a neighborhood. But your agent can.
I’ve spent years visiting neighborhoods and homes across the Wasatch Front, so I can tell you which ones will give you the downtown energy you want or the quiet suburban mornings your family needs.
